How does pseudonymisation differ from anonymisation?
Pseudonymisation replaces identifying information with pseudonyms in a way that allows it to be restored later using additional information. Anonymisation is irreversible — afterwards it is no longer possible to tell whom the data related to. Cryptonim is a pseudonymisation tool, not an anonymisation tool.
Does a pseudonymised document still contain personal data?
As a rule, yes. Under the GDPR, pseudonymised data that could be attributed to a natural person by using additional information remain personal data (Recital 26). Pseudonymisation reduces risk and limits what is disclosed, but data protection law still applies.
What does restoration involve?
Restoration puts the original values back in place of the pseudonyms. It is not decryption of the document. You decide whether and when data are restored.
Will Cryptonim find all the confidential information in a document?
No tool can be certain that all confidential information will be identified. Detecting information does not mean it has been removed from the document. A pseudonymised document should always be checked before it is shared.
Can I use Cryptonim before sending a document to an AI tool?
Cryptonim is being designed for exactly this kind of situation: to limit the confidential information in a document before it reaches an external tool. The decision to share the document, the choice of tool and the assessment of the legal basis remain yours.
When will Cryptonim be available?
