Why it matters

Confidential documents travel further than you think

Cryptonim helps limit the disclosure of information protected by law and by contract when a document goes to other people or to external tools, including AI tools. Protecting personal data is only one of these needs.

  • Professional confidentiality

Information entrusted to members of regulated professions in the course of their work.

  • Legal professional privilege

Information obtained by lawyers in the course of providing legal advice and representation.

  • Trade secrets

Technical, technological and organisational information that has commercial value and is protected by the business.

  • Confidential business information

Contracts, strategies, financial results and counterparty data that should not leave the organisation in readable form.

  • Official secrecy

Information obtained in the course of official duties, for example in public administration and the justice system.

  • Personal data

The GDPR names pseudonymisation as one of the measures for protecting personal data (Articles 25 and 32), but this is only part of what Cryptonim offers.

Cryptonim supports the protection of this information, but using it does not by itself ensure compliance with the law or with professional obligations.

How it works

Four steps under your control

This describes the intended way of working with the Cryptonim application, which is in development.

  1. Document

You work on your own document in the Cryptonim application.

  2. Pseudonymisation

Confidential information is replaced with pseudonyms, e.g. [[PERSON_000001]].

  3. Further work

You can keep working with the pseudonymised document while limiting the disclosure of confidential information.

  4. Controlled restoration

When you decide, the original values are put back in place of the pseudonyms.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How does pseudonymisation differ from anonymisation?

Pseudonymisation replaces identifying information with pseudonyms in a way that allows it to be restored later using additional information. Anonymisation is irreversible — afterwards it is no longer possible to tell whom the data related to. Cryptonim is a pseudonymisation tool, not an anonymisation tool.

Will Cryptonim find all the confidential information in a document?

No tool can be certain that all confidential information will be identified. Detecting information does not mean it has been removed from the document. A pseudonymised document should always be checked before it is shared.

What does restoration involve?

Restoration puts the original values back in place of the pseudonyms. It is not decryption of the document. You decide whether and when data are restored.

When will Cryptonim be available?
